When you begin to hear the distinct sounds of the Hunter (howling and screeching) it may be a good idea to begin Meleeing. If you are in a crowded room and you melee a Hunter, continue to melee it because after three or four hits (depending on health) the Hunter or other Special Infected will die, and saves you from accidentally shooting a teammate.
Another technique it so shoot the walls. If you suspect a Hunter to be following you, turn around and shoot to the left and right of the closest door. Most likely the Hunter or other Special Infected is in 3rd person watching you from this location. This may cause a newbie opponent to announce you are ‘cheating’ because you are shooting through walls.
Stick together, stick together, stick together. It cannot be emphasized enough. The game was designed so that team-work is essential. It’s actually a really cool aspect of the game. Teams composed of friends tend to really beat up the teams that were assembled through matchmaking.
In the beginning, leave the Safehouse all at the same time! First of all, everybody loads the level in different intervals due to server latency, and computer hardware. You may already have picked up your medkit, second pistol, and favorite primary, but your other teammate may not have even gotten past the splash screen! Once you open that door, you allow the Special Infected to spawn. Once the Special Infected has spawned, they can attack you inside of the safe room and inflict damage to you.
Not only that, if you open the door 10 seconds in and THEN realize you have an AFK player, you’re screwed! It usually takes 10 seconds at least to boot a player. By this time, the Special Infected could have caused the three people who are actually playing considerable damage.
You MUST open the door at the same time!
Also, you have a small window of opportunity to shoot a Smoker before he starts to pull you in. Try to quickly locate him and hopefully if you have an M16, you can drill him a few times before he can do anything.
