First of all, buy a freaking microphone. The quality of the game significantly goes up, and quickly justifies the $20 investment. Also, with a microphone, you are more likely to be on the winning team — the ’seasoned’ players are more likely to pick you as a teammate. Personally, I boot players without mics. I think it also gives some sort of individuality to the game. Also, it’s tons of fun to talk crap in the wee-hours of the night when most players (myself included) are inebriated.

Sometimes it is overlooked, but it is also pretty crucial to have the sound up, or to have good headphones. This way you can hear if any Special Infected or Zombies are near by.

Also, something I noticed — the Game Music is useful too. Personally, I mute the Game Music, because I have better zombie-slaying music playing in the background (usually Slayer!). This has its disadvantages, though– without Game Music on, you won’t be able to tell a tank has spawned until you can already see it, which may be too late.

Also, the sound comes in handy for the Infected too — if a Survivor triggers a car alarm — it’s time to attack!
